[...] Mobile is already starting to make the deskbound web a better place. Software engineer Darin Fisher is quoted: “We also knew there was a team at Google working on Android and we asked them, ‘Why did you guys use Webkit?’” So when it came to something as fundamental as the choice of a rendering engine, in a company self-proclaimed to “live on the Internet”, it turned out to be the mobile team that had the inside track. I’ve long believed that the PC-based web experience has lots to gain from applying some of the discipline of mobile. [...]

Apparently to support better development of their Windows Mobile platform, MS's next release of Vista will include an interface called "Through the square window"™ which offers a movable opaque layer which blanks your whole screen except for a [generous] 200 pixel square transparent viewing hole - encouraging PC developers/users to adapt to viewing things the mobile way. Apparently it was nearly included in the current release but the system requirements to render the drop-shadow effect through the window were too heavy for today's computers.

A bit off-topic to mobile design. It was hard to pick the highlights in last week's Jonathan Meades: Abroad Again - <a href="http://www.jonathanmeades.com/onthebrandwagon.html" rel="nofollow">"On The Brandwagon"</a> but "holstic pudding church" took the, umm, biscuit. Can't wait for this Wednesday's episode on Leeds architect Cuthbert Brodrick.
